WHAT I EAT IN A DAY // 2 MONTHS POST OP

What I Eat In A Day

Obviously, since having my gastric sleeve surgery, my diet has changed dramatically. I decided not to write a ‘What I Eat In A Day’ post for the first month because there wouldn’t have been much to tell you. I wasn’t eating a great deal and everything had to be pureed. I lived off soup, custard and mashed potato with baked beans! I could not wait to get onto the next stage of my meal plan. Talk about being more than ready to eat something that had flavour and texture. For a month, I have been able to eat anything I can mash down with a fork. On the 16th of February I can begin to introduce ‘normal’ foods back into my diet, such as chicken and other solids.

A lot of you, naturally, have questions as to what I am able to eat after having the surgery. I thought I would share with you what my diet consists of at the moment. I am planning on doing a Q&A video on my YouTube channel too, so if you have any further questions please ask!

BREAKFAST

For breakfast, I am now able to eat a full weetabix! When I first came out of hospital it was half, so you can imagine my excitement. I have mine warmed in the microwave with a little sweetener and can almost manage the entire bowl. On the odd occasion I will have porridge but only if I’m making it for someone else too, otherwise it isn’t worth the time or effort!

LUNCH

The rules at this stage of the meal plan are simple. Food has to be mashable, low fat and low sugar. I am still only eating out of a small ramekin dish. I ate more on the pureed diet as it was all liquid but now my food has a bit more too it. Gradually, I will move onto eating off a side plate, but for now I can manage around 5 teaspoons.

My go to meals at lunch have been an omelette as the eggs are full of protein. I have to make sure I am drinking enough but also getting in the maximum amount of protein I can. Some people opt for protein shakes but I can’t stand them! Putting tuna in an omelette is also something that not only I enjoy but is good for me. Other than that, I will have soup or a jacket potato with beans and tuna, (yes both together – don’t knock it until you have tried it!).

DINNER

I have never been more happy to eat a portion of cottage pie in my entire life. Tommy has been cooking in batches and freezing meals for me. My dinners at the moment are either cottage pie, chilli con carne (without the rice but with extra beans – think of the protein!), & spaghetti bolognese without the pasta. If we go out to eat, I will eat off the children’s menu. Fish fingers and beans have been one of my favourite meals at the moment!

SNACKS

They recommend having three ‘main’ meals a day and a maximum of two snacks. These can be the little low fat custard pots, sugar free jelly or a bit of tinned fruit – in juice not syrup. I have also been having low fat rice pudding. Apparently some people can struggle with rice but I have been okay so far. Half a tinned peach never tasted so good!

EXTRA BITS

Along with my medication, I have to take an A-Z vitamin once a day after food. I have to drink as close to 2 litres a day, I stick to sugar free squash and the occasional cuppa. I really struggle with drinking the amount I am supposed to. To make sure I get as much nutrients from food that I can, I have to stop drinking 30 minutes before food and wait 30 minutes for a drink after. This is so I don’t fill up on water, when I need the nutrients from food. It makes complete sense, but I forget to drink!

I’ve resorted to carrying a bottle around with me at all times so I remember. Otherwise, I find I get headaches from dehydration and it doesn’t help in the bathroom department either. When it comes to eating, you have to chew each mouthful thoroughly and leave 30 seconds between each one. As soon as I start to feel full I stop eating. Over eating causes me to feel very uncomfortable, burp a lot and in time could stretch my stomach. It is important to stop the first instance that I feel like I’ve had enough.

I think that just about covers it! As I said, please leave me a comment or tweet me if you have any questions as I will answer them in the video. The question can be anything related to the surgery, not just the food aspect. There is so much information I have to share with you about my surgery so there will be more posts to come.

For now, I am going to get back to my custard!
